While the three sons of Chairman Kim Seung-youn have each taken on roles in different sectors within the group, the youngest faces a leadership test with the rather unusual combination of businesses — technology and life solutions. First 10 days of August rank as hottest on record

Korea saw a record hot summer this year with the nationwide average temperature, excluding Jeju Island, coming to 29.1 C in the first 10 days of August, the highest on record, the state weather service said Tuesday. The reading is on par with the 10-day average of August 2018, making it the hottest first 10-day period of August in 53 years since 1973, when the weather observation network was expanded nationwide, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The average daily maximum temperature in the first 10 days of this month was 34.4 C, the second highest after 34.7 C recorded in 2018, the KMA said. The average daily minimum temperature, which is an indicator of night heat, was 24.8 C for the same period, the third highest on record following 25 C in 2022 and 24.9 C in 2018. The highest temperature recorded during the 10-day period was 42.5 C observed in the southeastern city of Yangsan at 1:26 p.m. on Aug. 2. Google has surpassed Naver in the number of monthly active users (MAU) in Korea for the first time, signaling that artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping one of the few markets in the world where a homegrown portal has long maintained its lead over the U.S. tech giant. Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC) has issued notices ordering homeless people seeking refuge from a severe heatwave to leave the terminals. Former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok currently holds the lead, but his margin over ex-party leader Jung Chung-rae is just 1.48 percentage points, leaving the contest wide open ahead of crucial votes in Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, North Jeolla Province and the Seoul metropolitan area. With regional voting completed everywhere else, Kim currently stands at 46.01 percent, or 95,821 votes, followed by Jung with 44.53 percent, or 92,735 votes. The labor union of Hyundai Motor said Tuesday it will stage four days of partial strikes this week after failing to reach an agreement with management over wages. EVAN's debut EP 'Death of Me' arrives Sept. 7

Solo artist EVAN, formerly known as Heeseung of the boy group ENHYPEN, is set to release his first extended play, "DEATH OF ME," Sept. 7, his agency Belift Lab said Monday. The upcoming EP marks his first return since debuting his solo digital single, "Ride or Die," just two months ago. Belift Lab, a subsidiary under HYBE that continues to manage ENHYPEN, confirmed that EVAN once again took a hands-on role in producing the album from start to finish. Building on the creative autonomy of his debut single, the new project channels candid reflections on his inner self alongside a firm resolve for his future, translating those personal themes into a rich, multifaceted sound. EVAN parted ways with ENHYPEN in March to forge an independent artistic path while remaining under Belift Lab. Rebranding under his childhood moniker rather than his birth name, Lee Hee-seung, the singer allowed ENHYPEN to transition into a six-member line-up while he established a distinct solo identity. Veteran actor Son Sook revealed that she donated all her earnings from "Spirits' Homecoming" (2016) to support survivors of Japanese military sex slavery, ahead of the film's 10th-anniversary re-release. In the film, the 82-year-old actor played the present-day elderly version of the main character Young-ok, a survivor of Japan's wartime sex slavery. On Aug. 26, the movie is scheduled for nationwide re-release with an extended cut version. Ahead of the film's return to theaters, the 82-year-old actor explained why she declined her initial appearance fee and donated all her box office bonuses. "Because the film holds a deep place in my heart, asking for compensation was never a consideration," Son said Monday through the movie’s distributor Connect Pictures.
